Introduction

9 years went along since the Battle of Endor. Just a few remnants of the former Imperial forces are still fighting against the new build New Republic, but the shadow the empire layed over the galaxy isn't banned. All kind of Dark Jedi, Imperial warlords and other fragments of the Empire are operating all over the galaxy, unseen by the eyes of the New Republic. With the capitulation of the Imperial fragments around Delasol some years before, the Republic used their chance to fight fire with fire. Along with others the 5th fleet, an Imperial fleet with it's origins in the Old Republic, got reinitiated to fight against the thread of the Imperial remnants. The 5th fleet is meanwhile a mix of Imperial veterans, veterans of the Rebel Alliance and officers of the New Republic, that started their military career long time after the end of the galactic civil war.

Structure of the New Republic

The New Republic is a federation of different races and systems familiar to the Old Republic. Each member of the federation sends a senator to Coruscant, the seat of the Republican senat. This senat decides about all important political issues and elects the president of the New Republic. Currently the position is hold by the former member of the Imperial Senat and Pricess of Alderaan, Leia Organa Solo. In the position of president she is also commander in chief of the New Republican armed forces.

Structure of the New Republican Naval Forces

Most of the fleets and armies defending the New Republic consist vehicles, equipment and personal the members of the New Republic asign to the federal command for a limited amount of time. Instead of having the full control about this units the New Republican command usually just coordinates the different forces as well as the logistic. Less then 10% of the New Republican Naval forces belong to the New Republic itself, the remaining are usually fleets of the Mon Calamarian Navy, Kashyyk Orbital Defense, Shreen Fleet, Kommonar System Defense forces and many others. The Naval High Command and the Central Logistics is stationed on Coruscant, Imperial City, while the Homebases of the different fleets are all over the galaxy. For example the Homebase of the 5th fleet is on Delasol. The Headquater on Coruscant coordinates the fleet, while the fleets usually act independent to fullfil the missions. The republican fleets are numbered from 1 to 300, but only the first 20 are fleets of a size that allows several Battle Groups. The other fleets are often smaller than a Carrier Group.

The New Republican Fleets

The fleets itself are organized different to each other. The 5th fleet is organized like most of the fleets in battle group structure. In Republican terms a fleet isn't a group of ships with travel together, a fleet is more a naval unit under a central local command. The basic unit is a Carrier Group, which contains a huge carrier or battleship and several mid size warships as escort. Even cruisers and corvettes operating independent are officially asigned to a carrier group. The Captain of the carrier groups flagship is also the commander of the Carrier Group. A Battle Group is unit of several Carrier Groups. While a fleet operates in different systems in a limited area, the Battle Group just concentrates on a single system. Support Groups are familiar to Battlegroups, but they usually consist of frighters, shuttles and transport ships. They can also have small carrier groups as escort.
